Recipe of the Month – February 2018
One of our favorite drinks, we first discovered it in the early 1970s when we were living in Washington, DC. A classic Italian cocktail the Negroni was reportedly first mixed in Florence Italy for Count Camillo Negroni in 1919. An early report of the drink came from Orson Wells in 1947 when he described the drink, “The bitters are excellent for your liver, the gin is bad for you. They balance each other.” Made by mixing equal parts Campari, gin and sweet (red) vermouth, it’s classically served up in a Martini glass but also excellent on the rocks and considered an aperitif, enhancing the taste buds before dinner. Definitely made for sipping.
2 ounces Campari (Italian aperitif)
2 ounces gin
2 ounces sweet (red) vermounth
twist of orange for garnish
Fill cocktail shaker with ice, and add the three spirits. Shake vigorously until well chilled. Strain into martini glass or conversely pour into highball glass and garnish with orange twist.
