Meet the Staff
The staff is a very important part of your visit to Abingdon Manor and all have an eye for detail. Several of the staff have over 20 years of service and everyone works hard to ensure your every wish is fulfilled. Read a little bit about each member of our team.
Our longest serving staff member, Vermel started in April 1996. The “glue” at Abingdon Manor, as senior housekeeper she ensures our guest accommodations are always the cleanest and best kept. In the kitchen most nights she makes sure the”first line” of food safety (clean dinnerware) is optimized. She also knows all the secrets of the servers, who treat her like their second Mom.
Curtis has worked at the Inn since March 1998 and oversees all of the building and grounds maintenance. He has been involved in the transformation of the Inn including new construction, decorating, furniture refinishing and general building and equipment maintenance among many other tasks.
As Sous Chef, Jeff has worked with us for 20 years, helping to secure the AAA 4 Diamond rating for 13 consecutive years. Originally from California, Jeff has worked in foodservice and restaurants for 35 years. A terrific baker, he makes many of the Inn’s desserts. He also helps with the monthly cooking classes, often instructing in bread and pasta making.
Paige has worked at the inn since December 2011. She worked as a server throughout high school and her time attending Coastal Carolina University and while working at a full-time job. Graduating with a degree in Exercise Science, Paige worked at Mcleod Health Systems in Loris in their fitness center. After getting married and buying a house in Latta, we were fortunate to convince Paige to-join the staff full time in March 2019. As the innkeeper, she is involved in all aspects of the business. She manages the lnn when Mike and Patty are gone, is responsible for guest services, handles reservations and guest inquiries, is involved in marketing, food prep and gardening, and just in general, everything to do with the lnn.
Lanelle is the breakfast cook, handles all the Inn’s laundry, and maintains all the downstairs common areas. She opens the Inn each morning and prepares the early morning beverage service before starting breakfast. Additionally, Lanelle sets the tables for dinner each day. She has worked at the Inn since September 2012.
Our current “senior” server, Corrie has worked for us starting in 2006 when she was just 14. After graduating from Francis Marion University she took a position as a research biologist at Patheon Pharmaceutical in Florence, where, of course, she excels.
Stephanie has worked at the lnn as a server since August 2015. After graduating from Latta High School in 2017, she was accepted at Francis Marion University, where she is a sophomore majoring in Nursing. Stephanie is a favorite with the guests and is focused on making sure everything runs smoothly in the dining room.
Jenna started working at Abingdon Manor in March of 2018. She graduated from Latta High School in 2019 with an lnternational Baccalaureate Degree and was active with the school drama club, serving as last year’s stage manager. ln the fall of 2019, she began her first year at Francis Marion University where she is pursuing a Nursing degree.
Kaitlynn is a sophomore at Latta High and began working at the lnn in December 2018. She is extremely friendly and engaging, as well as level-headed and self-directed. A cheerleader at school, she is very much a team player at the Inn.
Madyson is also a sophomore at Latta High, which means she’ll be here for at least another two and a half years. Madyson is in the school band playing the clarinet. Kaitlynn recommended her to join after one of our servers graduated in 2019 and went away to college. She started working at the lnn in July 2019.
Proprietors: Mike and Patty Griffey bought the property in 1995 and began a thorough upgrading, remodeling and redecorating of the property. Having traveled throughout England, the Griffeys were reminded of an English Country Estate, Abingdon Manor near Oxford.
Michael and Patty both owned successful businesses in Miami for over 25 years and regularly entertained in their home in Coral Gables. Having traveled extensively for business and pleasure throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and parts of Europe, the Griffeys first started discussing operating an Inn when visiting St. Kitts, a Leeward Island, in the mid-1970s. While affiliated with a company in Connecticut, Michael was a regular guest at a local Inn, and he and Patty were “bitten with the hospitality bug.” Waiting another 10 years, they began to search for a property in which to create an oasis for travelers. After selling their respective businesses and home, they traveled for 9 months, looking for the right property. South Carolina provided the perfect venue for what they wanted to accomplish, with friendly residents, temperate climate and a central location on the east coast. The Griffeys purchased James Mannings’ legacy with their first visit, knowing that the potential existed to develop a truly unique Inn. Patty is the Executive Chef and Michael handles Guest Service, Operations and Marketing.
